F1 2016

Nieuwe thread!

Quote:
But nothing could be further from the truth, for less than 24 hours after yet another lack lustre race in the season finale, where ‘FA ‘felt aggrieved by inconsistent officiating and an undeserved penalty, F1 superstar Fernando Alonso turns up at the ‘Dubai Kartdrome’, for one of the circuits regular Sodi World Series (SWS) races, first to present the trophies to the winning junior drivers on the podium, and then, to the absolute astonishment and delight of all the other competitors, enters and competes in the senior SWS races.

Alonso, an occasional visitor to the Dubai Kartdrome, had previously competed in the circuit’s prestigious endurance and leisure (but highly competitive) karting events, where he has driven, without any fuss, airs or graces, and has always willingly posed for photographs and happily signed autographs for the young kart drivers who aspire to follow in his tyre treads.

But on Monday night, in a search for the close wheel to wheel racing action that has been missing from his F1 season, the McLaren F1 driver quietly and effectively went about his business and was soon on the pace, qualifying second fastest. But despite his F1 world champion status, the races proved that track and seat time are paramount in any racing vehicle and with the spotlight on Fernando throughout, he could only manage 4th and a 5th in the races, still credible, but he did go on to show his prowess by setting the fastest lap of the entire SWS season in the final race.

zever in mijn ogen

4 January 2016 – Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen has expressed his frustration at the similarity between Formula 1's modern Hermann Tilke-designed circuits, arguing that they "all look the same".

On the 2016 calendar, Sakhir, Shanghai, Sochi, Marina Bay, Sepang, Austin, Yas Marina and the arriving Baku street circuit were all masterminded by the German designer.

Speaking to Turun Sanomat, Räikkönen said: "When we go to a new track, we know what to expect. They all look the same. There are no trees or anything else in the landscape.

"Of course, each track is always a little bit different, and each corner at the track is a little bit different, but ultimately the new tracks are made up of Tilke corners."

Räikkönen added that he is a fan of Formula 1's more traditional circuits, and picked out four dropped venues that he would like to see return to the roster one day.

"Turkey (Istanbul Park) was a nice track," the 2007 World Champion explained.

"I liked Magny-Cours – the track was so different, and nearby wasn't much hassle. Imola was one of the best – there was always a great atmosphere. Also the Nürburgring."

My friend Andres sent me a text today: "Venezuela is basically broke".
Hours earlier I was listening to a radio report about six hour lines in Caracas to get rice, flour and sugar.

Hugo Chavez' handpicked successor, Nicolas Maduro has failed to move the country away from it's $110 barrel oil "economy" and lost elections this past December by a landslide. The Chavista Supreme Court is declaring the now opposition led National Assembly invalid and the National Assembly is trying to get the Supreme Court fired.
Meanwhile, the government forces citizens to use a biometric scanner to buy a quart of milk...

As you may imagine interest Maldonado's gold plated (or was it oil stained?) driving sponsorship has fallen by the wayside in his native country.
There are news reports PDVSA has yet to pay the $50M it takes for anyone to give Pastor the keys to an F1car.
Not a shocker.
But surely if it starts in Venezuela, already a basket case for many reasons, low oil prices have the potential to threaten motorsport broadly.
Think Shell, Total, Petronas.
Think of the Gulf States: Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, you don't think they feel it? Qatar just killed off al Jazeera America because of low oil prices.
What about Azerbaijan, how long will that last?

And that's just F1....

verder:
Quote:
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has backed recent calls from drivers to introduce 'flat out' tyres, but reckons teams should do more to assist supplier Pirelli.

Pirelli, which returned to Formula 1 in 2011, has worked to a brief of supplying tyres that degrade more, aimed at opening up strategic options and boosting the spectacle.

Drivers have expressed frustration at this, due to the need to conserve their tyres, while structural concerns were also raised after two failures at last year's Belgian Grand Prix.

Ecclestone's comments follow on from Alex Wurz, the Chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, making clear that drivers want a tyre that "allows them to push".

> Kevin Magnussen - Een verdiende tweede kans.
