Los van de speculatie erop toch wel een geweldig clever systeem. Kan goed begrijpen dat overheden en banken zich zorgen maken.

For anyone who hasn’t been paying attention for the past week or so, one of the newest and most popular of the “altcoins” is Dogecoin, which lampoons Bitcoin and its ilk through its sheer absurdity. Based on the “Doge” meme, it’s built as a fork of Litecoin, and promises absolutely ridiculous rewards for mining, or “digging.” When it’s all said and done there will be one hundred billion Dogecoins, and the current block reward is one million coins. They trade for pennies or fractions of other coins, but their sheer volume has already brought their market capitalization to over $14M. Despite being tied to an old and mostly insufferable meme, it’s a brilliant parody, effectively mocking Bitcoin, bitcoiners, and the entire concept of cryptocurrency.

Or it would be, if it hadn’t been subverted by the invisible fedora of the free market. Dogecoin has already seen an ideological split, not two weeks into its existence. Again, it began purely as a joke, with the client software displaying everything in the much-reviled Comic Sans MS font, referring to mining as digging, and weird broken English everywhere. It’s beloved by 4chan’s technology board, /g/, who also spread the word that OS X has included a Bitcoin miner since 2009, then providing instructions on how to activate it, which involved running the rm -rf /* command with elevated credentials in a terminal, deleting the contents of the entire hard drive instead and hopefully destroying a cache of already-mined Bitcoins in the process. /g/ has since invaded or influenced reddit and Wikipedia, where they’re fiercely battling a request for deletion, insisting they’re as notable as Bitcoin, Litecoin, and a handful of other little-known “coins” whose articles are little more than stubs.

Something this funny and stupid couldn’t last long though, and while channers, goons, and other jokemen gleefully tossed thousands and thousands of Dogecoins back and forth and stole from each other, a less savory element was infiltrating their ranks and creating channels on freenode, where they take Dogecoin very very seriously. Once it was accepted on the market site Cryptsy, Dogecoin enthusiasts (the serious ones) believed that they had arrived and that it would be the next big thing and “invested” heavily in it. This was followed by Cryptsy taking their money/coins/hats/whatever, which, as it turns out, is not all that uncommon. This sent the Dogecoin true believers and speculators into fits, while the jokemen paid it no mind.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin was crashing. Some blame China’s new stance on Bitcoin, some blame hilarious things like “weak hands,” some just shout furiously about conspiracies. None of them seem to truly understand economics or speculative bubbles, and far too many people seem to have put all of their money into virtual game tokens; the top post at r/bitcoin for the day was the phone number for a suicide prevention hotline. Dogecoin, however, held strong, actually increasing in “value” as the day progressed, and the best (and most unhinged) theory was that Bitcoin was being unseated as the dominant cryptocurrency by Dogecoin. To add to this, various rumors about China’s exchanges were circulating, from executions to Chinese businesses switching to Dogecoin, further confusing and driving the panic.

As could be expected, some Bitcoiners are very unhappy with the existence of Dogecoin; without even the slightest hint of irony they’ll call it a scam, a pump and dump, stupid, and so on, all while being completely oblivious to the fact that it’s shining a glaring spotlight on their ideas and community, highlighting the absurdity of it all. Worse still, the ones who don’t shun it are going in full hog, “diversifying” by mining, buying, or otherwise obtaining a joke currency that makes them the butt of the joke. There’s really nothing else to it. We are all laughing at you.

What’s the future of Dogecoin? To any reasonable onlooker, it’s merely a curiosity, a ridiculous gag making fun of a ridiculous fad. To most crypto nerds, it’s also a joke, and most of them can take the lighthearted ribbing. To hardcore Bitcoiners? It’ s a threat or a promise, something to either be destroyed or embraced, there is no middle ground and everything is very serious business.
